This site records the progress of a grass-roots project designed to bring hope to a small number of these kids who live in the village of Chilubula. The project is the brainchild of Chief Charlie Kambuka who will regularly post articles. As Chief is regularly travelling in Zambia, his friends and supporters will also contribute content. This may not seem that remarkable, but the water is being transported along a pipe about 50m long and is being pumped from the well using a submersible pump attached to a petrol generator! This was the first attempt at using the pump and connecting it to the generator and was made possible by some excellent work from Leonard and my nephew Mbesha. The pump was able to fill a 210 litre drum with water in about four minutes and therefore saved HUGE amounts of time and energy.

Summer in Chilubula (Part 2)

We had some fantastic clothes and school jumpers donated to us by students from Newstead Wood and Ashburton schools and here you can see Jo sorting out the boxes and handing out the items. We had a crowd of about 650 spectators during the day with many participating in events such as the sack race, pole climbing, three-legged race and the ever popular pea spitting. All winners claimed prizes ranging from bread to dried fish and soap.

We may have been quiet, but a lot has been happening!

Although we have not had any new pictures or words, it doesn't mean that we have been slacking! Since the last post we have held a number of fundraising events and our AGM, and have been raising both money and awareness of the charity.

The 3rd Gala Event was held at the Hilton Croydon again this year and the attendees were treated to excellent food and entertainment. A total of just over £1800 was raised for our charity.

The residents of Crowhurst Village in East Sussex again were very generous in their support when we provided the refreshments at the Village Market. Another £200 to add to the pot.

We held a music quiz in May at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon. The teams had to grapple with music from various eras, and it was a tight contest, with my team being robbed of victory by 1 point! Better luck next time! £255 to add to our funds.

Our AGM in June was attended by many of our dedicated supporters and Jen and Reuben (two of our trustees) who visited Chilubula in December, were able to give them a real flavour of how things are progressing there through pictures and words.

We have been very fortunate in the last couple of weeks to have received much support from the staff and students at Sydenham School and the staff, students and Governors of Ashburton Community School. Sydenham School have donated enough coins and notes to pay for the Sports Day that Jo and I will be organising this August in Chilubula. The staff and students of Ashburton Community School will be collecting money from an 'own clothes day' and also handing in their old schools jumpers to donate to the children in Chilubula. The Governors have been very generous in providing some financial assistance to help fund our feeding and educational programmes for the next year. We feel privileged to have such loyal supporters.

Thanks to everyone for all they do for the charity.

More pictures from Christmas in Chilubula!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303738273320487122" style="FLOAT: right; They were so pleased with what they saw, and with the continued enthusiasm and vision of our manager in Chilubula, Leonard.

Whilst in Chilubula, they gave training to Leonard and his assistant on the laptop they had taken with them for the Centre. Meetings were held with the local committee who were able to talk about projects they were trialling to generate income; namely, sewing school uniforms and poultry keeping. So far, 20 uniforms have been made, with plans for 50 in total. The first round of chickens have been reared and sold, with the profits being used to buy a second round of 100. the hope is to expand to around 300 chickens over a period of 3-6 months.

This is just a very brief description of an incredibly busy time spent in Chilubula, but a time that was really positive and confirmed that progress continues to be made there!

World AIDS Day - Monday 1st December 2008

What will you be doing for World AIDS Day?

The organisation Avert has lots of ideas and information on their website http://www.avert.org/. More interest has been shown in the Centre by local and national government officials, who view it as a model set up! Communication has been quite difficult for the past few months due to the mobile phone network being very unreliable, so we have been relying on old fashioned snail mail, which can be very slow!

In December two of our trustees will be travelling from the UK to spend about a week in Chilubula to check on progress and discuss future plans with the committee out there. Lots of new photos on their return to share with you!

A date for your diaries- Friday 6th March 2009 is the date of our next fund raising Ball. The event proved again to be a really enjoyable evening for all who attended; good food, service, venue and an excellent band who managed to cater for lovers of many musical genres! Many thanks to all who attended and bought raffle tickets, bid on the auction prizes etc, etc. The sum raised for each charity from the event was just over £2500! Construction of a kitchen with big wood burning pots is already underway thanks to the generosity of the girls from Sacred Heart School in Hammersmith, who between them raised an amazing amount of money to make this possible! The pictures show the site being measured and one of the kilns used for baking the bricks.

Once the kitchen is complete, two more toilets will be added behind the school to cater for the increasing number of older children and adults we are helping at the centre.

A long, hot summer in Chilubula!

We arrived in Chilubula very excited to see what progress had been made since our last visit, and we were not disappointed. The first big thing we noticed was the activity around the bore hole and the lush vegetation showing over the fence from the new garden adjacent to the bore hole. The garden is already producing plenty of tomatoes, cabbages and cucumbers, and the bananas will fruit within the next year for the first time. The close proximity of the bore hole has enabled this garden to prosper. The bore hole is used heavily by a lot of the community and has meant that they now have access to safe drinking water. We can confirm that the water is totally clear and tastes OK!

On our second day lots of people starting arriving early, and we initially thought that they had come for casual work, but it turned out they were waiting for their adult literacy class to start. Two groups have been set up in response to requests from the community; Charlie's sister Eunice takes the beginners class and his brother-in-law Leonard takes the slightly more advanced group. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm with which the groups attacked their studies;such a desire to learn and better themselves. The majority of the classes were made up of women who had been denied an education earlier in life. They came with their small notebooks and pencils and often with their babies on their backs.

A large part of our time was spent organising the Sports Day. Last year about 500 people had turned out for the day, so we were anticipating that we would probably get more this year, perhaps 750. How wrong we were! They just kept coming and coming! We estimated about 1000 members of the community attended. All received free drinks and buns and had a thoroughly unique experience, something totally different. Event winners won prizes ranging from candles to soap to cooking oil to dried fish.

Dancing the night away!

Friday 2nd March 2007 saw 270 people resplendent in black ties and sparkly dressess enjoying an evening of music, dance, good food and great company at the first trio Charity Gala Ball at the Hilton Hotel, Croydon.

Chilubula was one of the trio of charities to host the event and take a share of the profits! The drilling took a few days, and then work was done on installing the hand pump.

Two months later and the water problem is history. This has been a huge step forward and an end to drinking unhygienic water. As well as for drinking, the water will be used to grow vegetables for the children during the dry season and to help with the completion of the remaining building work. The whole community in Chilubula will benefit.

Lots of news to come!

We must apologise for the lack of updates of late, but it certainly doesn't mean that nothing has been going on! Hannah Thomas, with the help of her friend, Keren, had managed to secure half a ton of free cargo space from the very generous British Airways. The great people of Diageo (Hannah’s company) and lots of other friends and family – thanks Jennie Bryson! – then collected a huge amount of clothes, toys and essential items for the village children. Charlie ferried the load to the village and distributed to those in need. A superb effort that will really help the whole community.

Progress update from Jo Kambuka

In August I visited Chilubula with our friends, Jen and John. We all had a fantastic time in Chilubula, and are all so pleased that the project is really making progress. Here is a brief summary of the types of things we did:

Jen and I taught the children in the nursery every morning for two hours for two weeks. We tried a variety of activities including singing, dancing, team games, craft activities, writing, painting etc. It was a pleasure to see them make progress in that short space of time. On our penultimate day we arranged some party games which included musical
chairs, pass the parcel and pin the tail on the giraffe! They were so pleased with their prizes of biscuits and sweets.

Charlie spent much of his time organising the Sports Day which was held on Saturday 26th August. He and his workers transformed the area in front of the school into a superb arena with shelters, white stone pathways, and a big entrance. He devised all the events and organized the committee to help with preparations.

We all helped in the distribution of clothing, shoes and bedding to approximately 70 children on the register.

Our stay culminated in the Sports Day, which proved to be a fantastic event with approximately 500 people attending. The day started with some traditional drumming and dancing and than less traditional activities took place. John, Jen and I were in charge of distributing the 1100 buns that we had helped to prepare plus 100 litres of squash and 400 litres of munkoyo (local brew) to all the eager spectators! It was organized chaos but a fantastic day. Video evidence is in circulation of my speech in Bemba!

See lots of you soon,

Love,

Jo

Marathon effort raises crucial funds

There are some amazing things going on to support our project, but I have to take my hat off to Anne-Marie and Sam who really put their bodies on (and across) the line in running all 26 miles, 385 yards of the London marathon to raise money for the Chilubula Support Group. They finished in 4 hours and 42 mins and 4 hours 10 mins respectively - a fine pair of finishing times.

Anne Marie reported hitting the infamous "wall" at about 21 miles but she soldiered on to the finish, showing true grit and determination. Apparently, it was all a bit of a blur after that and before she knew it, she was back in Devon! It was certainly worth it as between them they raised a stunning £800. So how will the money be used?

Well, Charlie is currently back out in Zambia and has reported that the main school building is complete and being used by the children three days a week. They get fed two meals a day as well on those days. We have employed two local teachers and have sent out money for the construction of three latrines and a kitchen, which is the next major job.

When those are complete, the next priority is to dig a bore hole which will provide fresh water for the community. We have raised about £2000 for that already, and Anne-Marie and Sam's money will help towards the total that we need which is about £3500.

Thanks again to Ann-Marie and Sam, and all those who supported them, for a superb effort.

What it's all about...

Here are the latest pictures of the children's centre, taken with a disposal camera so please excuse the quality! The children will have a classroom to use in 2006, and a qualified Nursery teacher to teach them! The nursery school children are now also fed two meals a day using money that we have raised. That is amazing progress.

Officials from the Education and Social Welfare departments have both been to visit, and were very impressed by the whole project, and are looking forward to returning when it is fully operational. Charlie, understandably is very pleased and proud with what has been achieved in a short space of time.

The next phase of building will be the construction of three pit latrines and the kitchen. We need more money for this and we hope that in the new year you will continue to support our efforts. We now have our bank account open, and so anybody interested can arrange to make a monthly donation. This will really help us with the long term planning of the project.

So, thank you for - buying/selling raffle tickets, donating tombola prizes, raiding your cupboards for Christmas food, baking cakes, eating cakes, wearing badges, refereeing football, filling your Smarties tubes, wearing your red ribbons, encouraging students to wear red ribbons, telling people about the project and anything else I have forgotten !!! Your efforts really have made a difference to the lives of the children of Chilubula and their families.

Have a fantastic Christmas !!!!

Jo

Grass-roots fundraising makes huge difference in Chilubula, Zambia

My name is Hannah, a friend of Charlie and Jo's, and I've just got back from 2 weeks of Zambian sunshine and Chilubula hospitality. Kaponda Farm (left), the site of the orphanage is on the outskirts of the village and provided a welcoming place for me to stay. I have never seen money stretch so far nor have I seen it put to such good use:

£350 on building materials (mostly cement and timber)

£100 on feeding the orphans breakfast and lunch for two weeks

£100 on giving the orphans a Sports Day to remember!

£150 has been left for the orphans food to cover the next five weeks.

We've also already raised a further £400 which will go towards building the orphanage roof and with another £1000 the first phase of the project will be complete. So if you haven't yet pledged any cash then please do get in touch as every penny still counts. A huge thanks to everyone in the UK who donated, which included friends of mine and Gareth's, Battersea Ironsides RFC, and colleagues from Brands2Life and Diageo. Your generosity has made a huge difference to these beautiful children and will continue to do so over the coming years.

Finally, a special thank you to the Chilubula committee who welcomed me with open arms and Charlie's family who made my stay a truly memorable experience.

Traditional Leaders Get Tough HIV/Aids

Saw an interesting article today on AllAfrica.com about how traditional leaders in central Zambia banned cultural practices they said were fuelling the spread of HIV/AIDS in their chiefdoms. Kansipe argues that it is amazing that Zambians are so poor when we are all blessed to be part of a country that has so much natural wealth. He goes on to look in particular at copper, a mineral found in abundance in Zambia. Copper is extremely valuable, not least because it is the mineral which carries electricity to all our homes. It is also used in most telecommunications networks. Most of the world’s Internet traffic is carried on copper cables. Copper has been mined in Zambia for over 2000 years, but as Kansipe points out, the country has very little to show for it. This has much to do with the fact that our country has not developed an infrastructure to develop the copper we mine into finished products – we simply export it raw. An article worth reading.

Progress at last

After a couple of weeks in Zambia, we are finally making some progress! The truck containing all the stuff for the orphans has finally left Tanzania and is heading towards the Zambian border, so we have devised a plan to try and save some time and get us to the village sooner. We will be leaving the Copperbelt tonight on the first of the trucks which has now been taxed, registered and insured. We will travel North to Kasama and my wife, Jo, will be dropped off in the village to start work.

Myself and the driver will go from the village the following day and drive up to the Zambia/Tanzania border to clear the final truck with ZRA (Zambia Revenue Authority). We will then return to the farm with the truck full of goodies. That's our plan anyway. I am originally from the Zambian village of Chilubula, though since 1992 I have lived in Croydon, South London with my wife, Jo. My home country is a beautiful place of which I am very proud, but like most Africans we also have some very serious problems. One of the most pressing is the devastating effect that HIV and AIDS is having, particularly on our children.

The charity SOS Children estimates that in some African countries 40% of the working-age population has contracted HIV. However, this is never uniform across a population; 40% of a whole African country will mean there are areas where virtually everyone has contracted HIV-AIDS. Unfortunately, my country is one of the worst affected. In places, village after village have no young adults left.

According to the AIDS charity AVERT there are 630,000 children orphaned because of AIDS in Zambia. They comment that the traditional mechanism for the care of vulnerable children, the extended family, has started to break down under the twin pressures of poverty and disease. Child-headed households, once a rarity in Zambia, are now increasingly common. I have seen this problem for myself first-hand in my own village. Children, left without parents or other family to support them are left with very little opportunity to make something of their lives.

This is why I decided to try and make a difference to bring some hope to Chilubula. With the help of my friends in the UK, we have raised enough money to ship some essential supplies to the village and surrounding area, and to build a Children’s centre in Chilubula. This is no small undertaking, but we are confident that we will make this a success.

A secondary aim of the project is also to spread the word back in the UK about the situation in Zambia. I want people to realise that the faces of children they see on TV are the faces of real people. This is why I am also inviting some of my friends from the UK to come and help with the project. I want them to see for themselves that these kids are victims, but they are also much more than that – they are beautiful, loving, children who deserve a chance. Despite the hardships, there is an amazing sprit and dignity which will always be there.

Over the next few months I will keep a record of how things are going with the project and post pictures as we

As I am now based in Zambia to set up the project, other material will also be posted on this site by my friends and supporters of the project.
